3 Reasons Fall is the Best Season to Get in Shape

Don’t wait for New Year’s Day to jump-start your resolution to get in shape! Fall is the best time to start a new exercise program and also the best season to implement successful diet strategies. Here is why you should take action now!

Fall is the perfect season to kick-start your workout routine, the backbone of your physical health. Along with a nutritious diet, exercise is the cure-all for many physical and mental ailments and degenerative diseases we face. While many people decide to start their weight loss and healthy living resolutions on January 1st – when you’ll probably be hungover and have unhealthy leftovers – being ahead of the curve and starting earlier allows you to enjoy the holidays guilt-free and motivated.

Between October and December, you can get into a new fitness routine and beat the rush to get in shape for the next summer, as it takes time to adjust and reach goals. That’s why fall is the perfect time to see what you can accomplish with a 90-day plan:

1. Weather

Fall brings those mind-melting temperatures to a merciful end, meaning it’s a great time to enjoy the outdoors. Something as simple as a daily walk can help you live a healthier life and reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure while improving cardiovascular fitness, memory, and sleep. Walking is a longevity secret and this time of the year gives you the perfect conditions to start walking.

The season also brings nutritious and fiber-rich fruits and vegetables, which can be great for your wallet and health. Some good examples are seasonal fruits, root vegetables, leafy greens, and squash. These types of foods make it possible to achieve your diet goals.

Start the habit of counting your calories this fall so when the holidays arrive, you are more knowledgeable about the foods you put in your body and become less inclined to engage in compulsive eating habits.

2. Routine

Most families revolve around the school year, so it often feels as if September is the true “new year.”  We see kids going back to school, parents and/or employees returning to full schedules, and, even if you don’t have kids, you can feel the impact by navigating more public traffic. It means we must be more efficient with our daily routine, creating new habits and solidifying healthy choices of our own.

Personal home fitness is one of the most time-efficient choices as it offers more flexibility and convenience. You can skip traffic, watch the kids while working out, and don’t have to leave your house or office during specific times to catch a workout class.

On the other hand, if you are not self-motivated, it’s easy to make excuses at home. You may be tempted to skip your workouts or get distracted and cut them short. Having a fitness coach can help you to hold yourself accountable while coaching the correct form for various exercises, particularly if you have a medical condition or are recovering from an injury.  Quality matters and you deserve it.

3. Motivation

Weight loss success is all about finding routines you can stick to, and fall is the ideal time to create and solidify those routines. We are adaptive beings, and challenges are what force growth. Deciding ahead of time that you will stay healthy throughout the holidays allows you the maximum amount of stability for your diet, along with the flexibility to enjoy your favorite foods.

We all have seasonal treats that we look forward to each holiday season, whether it be Thanksgiving dinner, a slice of pie, or your mom's homemade cinnamon rolls. Instead of using this time of the year as an excuse to treat yourself whenever the opportunity arises, consider prioritizing your favorite dishes and being more strategic about your "cheat meals”. Taking part in an exercise program is your motivational safeguard.

Also, what can be more motivating than kickstart the new year by looking your best? Get into healthy habits now so that you can have more fun, and set a resolution to “vacation in shape” as opposed to something that feels like self-punishment to start the year.

With the weather being ideal, and the routines returning to normal, we find ourselves with a tremendous opportunity to use this as motivation. This fall-inspired desire will kick-start you towards your goals and deliver the gift of health.
